The Benefits of Instrumental Music Education
Coming soon...
Research shows the greatest brain benefits occur for kids who start learning an instrument young (age 4-7) and remain engaged for at least 2 years. All types of music education for elementary students really do help children develop in other academic and social-emotional areas. Notably, musicians have improved problem-solving skills, memorize easier and faster, and often are great at STEM subjects. Other non-academic skills that can be strengthened through music education are things like time management, self discipline, perseverance, sensitivity to others (empathy), overall creativity.
The piano is an excellent instrument for beginners of all ages, but it is certainly not the ONLY instrument kids can get started on (check out my KinderFlute Group Classes!). But I love to start kids on the piano because is a visual "picture" of sound and anyone can walk up to a piano and press they keys without prior skill.
Knowing your way around the piano keyboard sets the stage for other instrumental learning and teaches music theory and ear training that may lead to voice study. Did you know most beginning band programs require or strongly suggest percussionists have at least 2 years of piano lessons? Or that most college music programs require piano proficiency for ALL music majors, regardless of their path of study?
Of course you want their child to develop those traits!
Why Study an Instrument such as Flute or Piano? There are so many reasons! Here are a few articles and videos that explore the many benefits of instrumental music in childhood.
