Sarah's Studio is excited to offer KinderFlute Classes in the Des Moines Metro Area!

Something about the "magic" of the first sound

Add the clip of Lucy and her amazing smile when she got a sound during FIRST class.

It is a super fun group flute class for elementary students (ages 5-9) created by master flutist/educator Kathy Blocki. In these classes, students will explore music theory, notation & rhythm; build listening skills; and of course learn to play the flute through creative group and private instruction using games, movement, and proven music teaching techniques.

What is KinderFlute?

KinderFlute classes pack in a lot of active learning. This is a recipe for awesome brain benefits; a process called neurogenesis (which means “birth of neurons”) is enhanced when students are physically active while simultaneously engaged in an enriching activity. So kids are literally building brain cells during a KinderFlute Class. It's like Miracle Grow for little brains!

You may have heard of beginning with Kindermusik, Suzuki Violin, or group piano lessons; but flute lessons may not be on your radar.

Did you know kids simply do not have to wait until 5th grade band to begin learning the flute?

Young children can progress quickly on flute. KinderFlute may even serve as a jumping-off point to explore other musical instruments in the future because it provides a solid music theory foundation.

That’s OK!

Why KinderFlute?

If you desire to expose your child to instrumental music at a young age, KinderFlute may be a unique option for you!

Early music learning produces stronger connections in the brain, leading to enhanced cognitive function in memory, language, executive function and STEM subjects.

Studies show...

Students who begin music education in early childhood often stick with it longer and find greater fulfillment from their musical skill later in life.

And remarkably, these benefits persist into adulthood, long after the music lessons stop!

Where are KinderFlute Classes held?

Intro Classes and Group Classes: Grace Ballet & Acrobatics Studio, 1380 NE 66th Ave., Des Moines, IA 50313

Private Lessons: Ms. Sarah's home in Urbandale near I-80 & 86th Street.

Does an adult need to stay during KinderFlute Classes or Intro Classes?

YES! It is essential that a grown-up accompany students in these classes to observe and maybe even participate in the games and activities right along with us. This grown-up will be learning along with us in order to facilitate home practice and ensure success.

What if there is no adult available to attend lessons and classes with my child?

In this case, KinderFlute may not be the right choice for you and your student at this time. For KinderFlute Intro Classes, A parent/guardian, or even an older, responsible sibling MUST plan to accompany your student to the classes (no exception). For ongoing KinderFlute Group Classes and private lessons a parent/guardian must be available to attend all private lessons with the student (no exception) and a portion of some group classes (at instructor’s discretion). This is important because young children need a practice buddy at home. The parent/guardian’s role will be to assist the child in holding the flute correctly, guiding through practicing the material assigned, and generally encouraging and assisting the student. Don't worry though....The grown-up helping out does NOT need to be a flute player, or even a musician! I promise, I will make it easy for you to assist your child, and it will be a fun and rewarding experience for you to enjoy together.

Do I need my own flute?

For an Intro Class – NO. All materials, including a REAL Flute Headjoint, will be supplied.

For ongoing KinderFlute Group Classes - YES.
Ms. Sarah, she will help you navigate purchasing all necessary music books, gadgets, and an instrument. Options for a flute may range anywhere from $150-$1,000 for an appropriate flute for your student. Many factors will be considered – especially student’s size, ability as assessed during an Intro Class, and family’s available budget. Ms. Sarah may recommend a simple plastic flute such as the Nuvo Toot or J-Flute, a mini-version student flute such as the DiZhao Mini-D, or a used or new full-size student model flute with straight and/or curved headjoint. Don’t worry – she will help you understand all the options and find the perfect flute for your mini flute player!

We already own a student flute. Can we use it for KinderFlute Classes and Lessons ?

Maybe. It depends on the size of your student (height, arms, etc.) If the flute you own is a standard-size student model flute, your student may need time to grow into it, but some older elementary students may be able to start on a standard-size flute. It may also be possible to obtain a curved headjoint to use with your existing flute until the child has grown large enough to use the straight headjoint. Ms. Sarah can help determine the best instrument for your little flutist!
